You have proposed, she has accepted, and you want to know how to get married in Italy. Congratulations! Now you need to know some things about getting the appropriate legal documents and making sure your marriage can take place just the way you want it to. Wedding ceremonies take a long time to plan, so start early with these guidelines on how to get married in Italy.

  1. All of the people in the wedding party and the attending guests will need official, up to date passports to travel to Italy.
  2. A form called the "Nulla Osta" will need to be filled out as a prerequisite to marrying in Italy.
  3. Marriage ceremonies cannot be performed by U.S. Consuls, nor be performed on the premises of the U.S. Consulate.
  4. The applicable laws for marriage in Italy are the same all over the country. However, each city or town may interpret these laws differently, so it is crucial that you contact the Town Hall of the city you want to be married in to double-check their requirements.
  5. Other documents necessary include birth certificates, proof of dissolution of any prior marriages, including a death certificate if applicable.
  6. Members of the U.S. Military may present their military I.D. instead of a passport, along with a "permission to marry" issued by their commanding officer.
  7. Other rules apply to recently-divorced women. A woman whose previous marriage was terminated within the last 300 days must obtain a waiver from the District Attorney's office at the Courthouse in the city where the new marriage will be performed. Such waiver is issued upon presentation of medical evidence that the applicant is not pregnant.
  8. The fee for administering the oath is very small compared to the rest of the ceremony arrangements. It is only $50.
  9. You can hire a wedding planning service that specializes in planning Italian weddings for U.S. citizens, and they will help you with the forms, rules, and regulations of the region you want to marry in. Isn't that good news?

As you can guess, planning a wedding in Italy requires some paperwork and some knowledge of the laws and rules of another country. Be sure to be familiar with these laws and guidelines as to how to get married in Italy before calling your travel agent and jetting off to Tuscany. If you plan carefully and get help, you can have your dream wedding in Italy.
