Figuring out how to get medical insurance is important regardless of your current health. It helps to cut the cost of medical expenses like doctor's appointments and prescriptions.  While most people receive these benefits through their employer, there are other ways.

  1. If you were just hired for a new job, check to see if you are eligible for medical insurance. If you are, the cost can be deducted directly from your paycheck. If you aren't sure whether or not you can get benefits, talk to someone in the human resources department.
  2. If you are eligible, you will need to fill out paperwork. You will need to give you name, social security card and information about the people that you are going to covering in your plan (your dependents). Turn this paperwork in by the due date. If you miss the enrollment opportunity, you may have to wait until the company holds and open enrollment period.
  3. If your employer doesn't offer medical insurance, you will need to see if you can afford it on your own. You can search through different companies to see what they have to offer. You want to pay attention to the amount that you will have to pay per month, what the policy covers, and what your out of pocket expense will be.
  4. For each of these companies, you will need to fill out all of the personal information as well as your health history. You will be given a quote that you can look over to see if the policy is affordable.
  5. Depending on your salary, you may be eligible for government assisted medical insurance. The Department of Economic Security (DES) offers medical insurance assistance. You can fill out an application at their website and find out if you are eligible and how you can get help.
The cost of doctor's visits, medications and hospitalization in steadily increasing. Even if you think you are healthy and don't need it, consider getting medical insurance.
