How To Get Rid Of An Ear Infection

Knowing how  to get rid of an ear infection will not only make your life easier, but your child's life easier.  An ear infection can be painful and cause little ones to howl in pain.  An ear infection can be accompanied with fever, trouble sleeping, and trouble hearing.  All of these can combine to make your child feel cranky.

  1. The great news is that most ear infections go away on their own.  You usually don't have to do anything special to get rid of an ear infection.  If your child complains about pain, an over-the-counter pain reliever can be given.  It is important not to give your child aspirin. Giving a child aspirin can lead to complications like Reye's syndrome.
  2. A child experiencing pain from an ear infection may also be given a heating pad for their ear.  Apply the heating pad and allow the child to rest.  Most children feel better after resting.
  3. For some children, it can be a bit difficult to get rid of an ear infection.  Your child's pediatrician or your family doctor may want to prescribe an antibiotic.  Most doctors shy away from giving children antibiotics to get rid of an ear infection because of recent concerns that a tolerance to the drugs will develop.  This will make it more difficult to treat future ailments with antibiotics.
  4. One of the most important things to know about how to get rid of an ear infection is knowing how to prevent them occurring in the first place. Here are some little known causes. Avoid smoking around small children.  Even if you smoke outside or in other areas away from children, the smoke in your clothes can still lead to an ear infection. Babies should not be allowed to go to sleep sucking on a bottle.  This can also lead to an ear infection.

The best thing a parent that wants to get rid of an ear infection can do is comfort their child.  Sometimes a hug goes a long way with a child that is feeling irritable from an ear infection.
