Learning how to get rid of heartburn effectively may often be more beneficial than trying to just manage or treat the symptoms. As a matter of fact, getting rid of heartburn may not be as difficult as many may believe. There are various mechanisms that will not only help alleviate the painful symptoms, but can essentially help get rid of heartburn.

  1. Diet. Those seeking to get rid of heartburn altogether should consider making some significant changes in their diet. This is one of the number one ways to manage heartburn and eliminate it. Avoiding acidic foods, eating smaller meals, and not eating a few hours before lying down are a great start. He should also avoid heavily carbonated beverages, caffeine, alcohol and other items that may cause irritability.
  2. Medication. Certain drugs can also have a serious impact on the digestive tract. Anti-inflamatory drugs such as aspirin and many other pain medications that are sold over the counter or by prescription can increase and/or cause heartburn. However, a physician should be consulted before discontinuing or taking alternate medications. Often, he may be able to recommend alternative drug therapies.
  3. Immediate Relief. Getting rid of heartburn immediately can be a difficult feat. Antacids can typically be used to provide heartburn relief within a matter of minutes and loosening garments may also beneficial. Drinking a glass of milk can assist in  neutralizing the acids caused from a heavy and/or acidic meal. Changing positions and reducing activity during a bout of heartburn have also proven effective in relieving symptoms and getting rid of heartburn more quickly.
