Many patients wonder how to get rid of myofascial pain, especially if it is affecting their daily living. Myofascial pain syndrome is a chronic musculoskeletal pain disorder that affects a single muscle or an entire muscle group. The pain is centered around trigger points. which cause the pain to spread through the muscle or muscle group. Common areas affected by myofascial pain include the head, back, arms, legs and jaw.

  1. Talk to a doctor to see if physical therapy can help get rid of myofascial pain in your trigger points. The physical therapist can help you determine the causes of your pain are, such as poor posture. You can then treat the underlying cause of your myofascial pain. The physical therapist may also show you exercises to get rid of the pain.
  2. Get a massage from a physical therapist or masseuse that specializes in myofascial pain. Massage of the affected area will can help reduce tension and pain.
  3. Consider getting trigger point injections. A doctor can give an injection of an anesthetic to the affected muscle. The doctor can also inject corticosteroids or botulinum toxin.
  4. Ask your doctor if tricyclic antidepressants or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) could make a difference in your pain. Tricyclic antidepressants can help you sleep, if your pain is affecting your sleep quality. You can also try over the counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, like ibuprofen.
  5. Practice different forms of relaxation to reduce the amount of myofascial pain. Try yoga, meditation or journaling to help keep the stress at bay. Keep a healthy balance on your work and spare time.
  6. Keep a healthy lifestyle. Eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and proper sleep hygiene helps keep your body strong and able to cope with your pain more efficiently.
