Knowing how to get sponsored as an athlete can be tough. However, if you are a serious athlete, you might need sponsorships to pay for things like gear, event registration fees and time off work for training and to actually attend the athletic competition. There are many businesses and individuals who are willing to sponsor an athlete, but there are a few things you need to know about getting those sponsorships.

To do this task, you will need:

  • Resume
  • Sponsorship letter
  1. Write a resume outlining your athletic accomplishments. If you want to get sponsored as an athlete, you need to show that you are committed to your sport and accomplished in it. Do this by creating a one page resume. Highlight your abilities by including teams you’ve been on, major competitions you’ve participated in and of course, any medals, awards or honors you’ve been given. You can also include volunteer work you’ve done with your community. This will make potential sponsors more interested in helping you our through sponsorships.
  2. Create a sponsorship letter. This is the letter that you will submit to potential sponsors asking them to sponsor your athletic endeavors. It will include some of the same information that you have in your resume. Start off the letter by explaining who you are and why you’re writing to them. Then, give examples of your key accomplishments and if applicable, why you’re deserving of sponsorship. Finally, thank them for their time. Address each letter to individual businesses, organizations or people. Do not send out generic letters.
  3. Ask people you know first. Present your resume and sponsorship letter to people you know, such as friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, classmates or even fellow athletes. Even a few dollars can help when looking for sponsorships. Ask for feedback on your resume and letter to get ready to approach potential major sponsors.
  4. Submit your sponsorships letter, resume and any other application materials to potential sponsors. Large corporations that sell athletic gear, apparel, food or drinks often sponsor athletes with big bucks. Check websites for more information. If you can’t find any information on the web, contact each company or organization directly to ask about athletic sponsorships.
