Learning how to get sponsored in skateboarding is a goal for many novice skaters. Sponsorship is a great opportunity to have a company’s support while endorsing and promoting their products or services. Finding sponsorship can be somewhat of a challenge for unknowns in the skating world, but there are a few steps to take to increase potential sponsor’s awareness of your presence and secure a sponsorship deal.

  1. Understand the Difference between Sponsored vs. Pro. Confusing becoming a professional skater with being a sponsored skater is a huge mistake as the two scenarios are drastically different. Sponsored skaters receive free gear and access to events. Additionally, sponsors may cover or reimburse costs for skaters to participate in activities in which they promote the company. On the other hand, professional skaters get paid directly from the company’s they work for whether they are promoting or not. Typically, sponsorship comes before going pro and bringing in larger paychecks.
  2. Create a Press Kit. Making a name for yourself and increasing sponsor’s awareness is a huge part of learning how to get sponsored in skateboarding. Many skaters create press kits including headshots and biographies detailing skating events attended and awards won . Many press kits prepared in order to gain a sponsor in skateboarding also contain videos displaying talent and abilities. Creating an online following also helps in getting sponsored in skateboarding. Sponsors look for skaters who know how to attract and audience and show them that you have a strong grassroots following could provide a competitive advantage over other skaters.
  3. Contact Potential Sponsors. Find skateboard sponsors and their contact information directly on their company Website. Taking initiative plays a big role in maintaining a sponsorship in skateboarding. Sponsors want to know that their sponsored riders exhibit initiative so show them you have drive via contacting them first and reaching out for a sponsorship, as opposed to waiting for sponsors to come to you.
