How to Get Your Girlfriend to Lose Weight

By: Josephine McCulley

How to get your girlfriend to lose weight is a delicate mission.  One wrong move and every time you ever told her how beautiful she is doesn't count and you're on the outs.  The key?  Pitching in.  If you really want your girlfriend to lose weight you have to invest yourself in the task at hand.

  1. Unless your girlfriend is dangerously over-weight, the direct approach is a bad way to go.  If she does truly need to lose weight before she becomes diabetic or can't get around, go ahead and sit your girlfriend down and tell her how concerned you are for her well-being, and that you are willing to do everything you can to help her lose the weight.  And then, follow through.  The rest applies even if your girlfriend has just gained weight recently.
  2. You can't expect your girlfriend to lose weight if you wouldn't be willing to do the same.  So, do the work with her.  Remember that it will be harder for her to lose weight than for you.  Her body is designed to retain more fat, and she can't eat as much or as poorly as you might be able to and still lose weight.  Simple facts of being female.  Often women gain weight in relationships simply by starting to eat like you do, so take a good look at your eating habits.   Also keep in mind that this is not the time to make jokes about her weight or how she runs or whatever pops up.  Be your girlfriend's cheerleader, not her critic.
  3. For her to lose weight, you need to be doing healthy things.  To get your girlfriend to lose weight, you'll have to play the game too.  Tell her that you want to eat better and get healthy.  Instead of your usual take out, cook a healthy dinner.  Instead of booze or soda, switch to water.  Instead of sitting in front of the TV, go for a walk or join a gym together.  Plan physically active weekend activities like hikes and quality time in the bedroom.  Sex counts.  If you're feeling truly helpful and you have the knowledge, see if you can get your girlfriend to spend some time in the weight room with you.  Don't worry, your girlfriend won't bulk up and she will have an easier time losing weight with more muscle.
  4. Finally, remember that stress can be a huge part of weight gain and sabotaging weight loss.  Has your girlfriend had a hard time at work recently, family drama, or maybe your relationship's been troubled?  Do what you can to help her de-stress, too.
