Fortunately, getting a license to ride a motorcycle in Viriginia is not too hard. You do not even have to have a regular driver's license before applying for a motorcycle license.
- Pass a vision test. When you go to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, you will have to take a vision test on site before you can get your license to ride a motorcycle. Once you pass the vision and knowledge test, you will be granted a motorcycle learner's permit. If you do not have a regular driver's license, you will also have to pass the driver's license knowledge exam before you can get your license to ride a motorcycle in Virginia.
- Enroll in the Virginia Rider Training Program. The training program is optional but will help you gain skills and confidence as a rider before you get your motorcycle license.
- Take and pass the Motorcycles Skills Test. You can take the test after you've had your permit for 30 days if you are over 19 or after nine months if you are under 19. You must bring your own bike to the test as well as protective gear and a helmet. If you've taking the Rider Training Program, you are exempted from taking the Skills Test.
