How To Give A Good Back Massage
Learning how to give a good back massage can be a very beneficial skill to have. Back massages can soothe away aches and pains, relax the body and even relieve stress. Luckily, you do not need any professional training to learn how. This article will take you step-by-step on how to give a good back massage.
- Choose a location. A good back massage starts in a comfortable atmosphere. Make sure that the location you choose is free of drafts and warm enough so the recipient will not become cold. The area should be free of clutter, noise and distractions. Soft music and scented candles can help create a calming atmosphere that will make the back massage even better.
- Get into position. A massage table is ideal for giving a comfortable back massage since it keeps the back completely straight. If you do not have a massage table try having the recipient lie on their stomach on the floor. Place a pillow right under the breast bone and a pillow under the feet. A rolled towel can be used for the recipient to rest their forehead on. To give the massage you should kneel or stand at their side.
- Explore the back. Before you begin, oil up your hands so that they glide with ease on the skin. Start by simply letting your hands slowly and gently explore their back, feeling all of the bones and muscles. Take your time and explore the entire back, varying your pressure.
- Massage the sides of the spine. With both hands flat on the lower back and on either side of the spine, slowly glide your hands firmly up the back using circular motions. Repeat on both sides of the spine, going up and down several times. Do not touch the spine, as this can be uncomfortable.
- Massage the sides. Place your hands on the rib cage opposite of you. Starting at the hip, use sweeping circular motions to work your way up to the arm pit and back down to the hip. Repeat on the other side.
-
Knead the entire back. Use you fingertips and knuckles to knead the entire back. Start with gentle and light kneading and gradually increase your pressure to firmer kneading. Be sure to knead the entire back and sides.
- End with caresses. To end the massage use light fingertip caresses to sooth the back. Start at the base of the neck and lightly stroke your fingertips all the way down to the base of the spine Repeat this several times.
