How To Grill Vegetables

Learning how to grill vegetables is not very hard, and it can be a fun and tasty way to prepare healthy food. There are a few things to go to prepare certain vegetables for grilling, but aside from that, they are easy to grill at home. The following steps outline advice on how to grill vegetables.

  1. First, prepare the veggies that you are planning on cooking for the grill. If grilling thick ones, such as squash, cut them into small circles or into long strips lengthwise, as the inside will not cook on the grill before the outside chars if they are thrown on whole. Tender veggies such as tomatoes should be cut into pieces or chunks, and they may be skewered for grilling, as their soft skins easily burn way before the inside even heats even on low heat (unless they are wrapped in foil and then placed on the grill). Sprinkle veggies with seasonings such as salt and pepper to prepare them for grilling. If you want, make a marinade for some vegetables.
  2. Take a wire brush to the grill rack to clean it of any residue left behind from previous grilling sessions. Turn it on to medium low heat, and spray the rack with a little cooking spray.
  3. Place the vegetables on the grill, so that long pieces run perpendicular to the wires of the rack. Onions may be grilled in foil, or cut into thinner sections, each with rings, and grilled that way. Pepper may be cooked in the same ways, or skewered. Place any skewers, perhaps loaded with different vegetables, perpendicular to the rack.
  4. Close the lid, and allow the vegetables to cook. Check every few minutes to make sure that they are doing well. Tomatoes cook quickly, as do small sections of cucumber, and squash-like veggies, but tougher ones, such as onion and pepper, take longer. Allow the vegetables to cook until they are soft and ready, and then serve them hot. This will take about five minutes for soft veggies, and up to about fifteen, with occasional flipping, for tougher veggies.

Learning how to cook vegetables is not too hard, but there are different preparation styles and times for various items. Closely monitor your grilling vegetables to make sure that they do not char, that they are cooking well, and are receiving enough heat. You now have deliciously prepared, healthy food.
