How To Grip Golf Club
If you are a beginning golfer, you will definitely want to know how to grip a golf club. This is the beginning building block for the game. Mastering the grip will eliminate many of the frustrations that are to come. Golf is a tough game that requires patience and tenacity. Let us begin with the grip. There is not one specific grip that works for every individual. The preferred grip that will guarantee a square club face at impact is the overlapping grip.
- Place your top hand on the grip of your club. This will be your left hand if you are a right handed golfer. Grip the club with your other hand. Place the pinky finger of the bottom hand securely between the middle and index finger of the top hand. This is what is referred to as the interlocking grip of the golf club. The thumb of the top hand should be resting in the palm of the bottom hand.
- Check the directions of the V's formed by your thumb and index fingers. The V formed by your top hand should always be pointed at your chin. The V formed by your lower hand can be rotated to create different shots. For the neutral shot, which should always be used by the beginning golfer, the V should be pointed directly at your trailing shoulder. As you advance your game, you can rotate the V more to the right to hook the golf ball and rotate to the left for a slice shot. Reverse this golf grip for the left handed golfer.
- Check the direction of your club face. Too often, the beginning golfer will concentrate on their grip and forget to line up the club face with their target. After you have assumed the correct grip, lay your club face down behind the ball. Make sure the face of the golf club and the target are perpendicular.
- Don't grip too tight. Everyone has the tendency to want to squeeze the club. This will create all kinds of problems with your golf shot. The correct grip is comfortable and just firm enough to control the golf club throughout the swing. If you are squeezing the club, you are trying to crush the ball, thus overswinging.
