You probably know how to have good credit if you are are responsible from the start. Paying off your debts on time, keeping your balances low, increasing the length of your credit history, the type of credit you have and new credit all affect your credit score. A credit score is a value of your trustworthiness and ability to pay your debts. A good credit score is a value of your trustworthiness and ability to pay your debts.

Payment history shows whether or not you are trustworthy. If you are on time paying your credit cards and loans every month, then you should have very good credit. Your payment history focuses on credit cards, store accounts, installment loans like vehicle loans, mortgages, and finance accounts, like a brokerage account. Late payments immediately hurt your score. Repeated late payments can put a bad mark on your credit score and make it difficult to get a good interest rate when you apply for another loan of any kind. Missed payments might even make it impossible for you to get another loan.

Keep your balances low. If you are missing payments, then your balance might be too high. It is bad to have your cards maxed out, or close to the credit limit. It shows that you are just at the brink of defaulting, and that any blip in your life can put you into financial ruin. If you have trouble using your credit cards, and know you can do without them, then leave them at home, freeze them, or just cut them up. There are many people who think they will only use their cards for points and later end up racking up more debt than they can afford. Try to reserve credit for emergencies, and ignore credit card perks until you can keep up with paying off the cards you have.

The type of credit you have can also affect your credit score.
Different types of credit are credit cards, mortgages, secured loans, student loans etc. You You do not need to have each or every type of credit, but how you use the credit you do have will affect your score. It is not a good idea to finance big expenses, like a car, on a credit card for example.

Your good credit history length reveals more about your credibility. The longer you have had credit, and the longer you have maintained a good history, the better your credit score will be. Likewise, a period of bad credit can be fixed with enough time, so long as you work hard to recover your bad credit image. It is never too late to have good credit.

New credit inquiries also count for your credit score. New inquiries suggest that you have or are about to take on more debt. This is a warning sign for some lenders, unless they are the ones doing the "hit."

Having good credit will save you money in the long run because you will be charged less to borrow money. It will give you financial freedom and the ability to have more choices in life.
