A heart murmur is the sound a doctor hears with his stethoscope. It is typically a swishing sound and is most commonly due to the blood flowing abnormally in and out of the valves. 

1. When a doctor hears a murmur, he will usually order more studies such as an echocardiogram. This is an ultrasound of the heart that shows the doctor pictures of your heart so he can see all the structures and any abnormalities. It is a test that may be helpful to determine if a valve is leaking, or has regurgitation, and to what degree. It can also detect valve stenosis which is a problem where the valve is stiff, tight, or narrow and does not allow the blood to flow forward and through the valve.
2. Your doctor may decide to put you on a medication, such as a beta blocker. This can help to keep the heart beating at a more normal rate. If the murmur is significant and is caused by problems to do with a valve, your doctor may want to do valve repair. This would require surgery. Your doctor would need to go into the chest, to the heart, and repair any valve or valves that may be experiencing problems with leakage or regurgitation.

Many times, a heart murmur is nothing to be afraid of nor is it serious. If it is serious, your doctor will know what the best course of treatment would be for your condition.
