How To Hit A Speed Bag

Learning how to hit a speed bag takes skill. Speed bags may look like an easy deal, but they are not. Learning the techniques for hitting a speed bag is learnable at any level of boxing. Speed bags are used to increase timing, hand eye coordination and precision. Speed bags are inexpensive pieces of training gear and should be in every boxing and MMA gym. This article will walk you through the steps needed to learn to punch a speed bag. Take the time to learn speed bag technique as it is very important to the overall success a boxer or MMA fighter. Speed bags are also a great cardio workout.

To hit a speed bag, you will need:

  • Speed bag
  • Hand protection

How to hit a speed bag:

  1. Approach the speed bag with the same foot position as you would any other bag. Keep your stance tight and lead with you jab hand. You can either practice with one hand or incorporate both. You can learn many drills once you have the timing down.
  2. Hit the bottom portion of the speed bag with your jab hand. Notice the bag will move forward and strike the underside of its support. The bag returns. Work the timing so that the first punch sends the bag forward and as the second hand moves to strike, the speed bag is returning.
  3. This is much tougher then it sounds. Timing and hand eye coordination is paramount. Your hands should move in a rhythm, one to the next striking the speed bag in the same location. Practice this until you have the timing and coordination down.
