Learning how to hit tennis backhand is essential for those who want to play the game.  You will need this shot considerably as you play the game.  While it is more difficult than the forehand, try not to neglect it as some do, as it can be learned with some practice.  Take the following considerations into account to learn how to hit tennis backhand.

  1. Move into proper position is essential.  You want to get into position as soon as possible.  Move into position where your extended backhand will reach the ball.  You may need to hit the backhand to determine exactly how much room you will need.  At any rate, work on getting your feet set as quickly as possible, with your lead foot forward for power and control.
  2. Get ready to hit the shot.  Once you're in position, you will nearly be ready to execute the backhand.  With one or both hands, grasp the racquet appropriately and pull back your hands slightly.  Some backhand techniques pull the arms back more than others.  Once you develop your technique, you may be able to bring back your arms as you move, if only slightly.
  3. Execute the shot.  Bring your hands forward and upward at impact.  This will create the proper path for the backhand, as well as placing some forward spin on the ball.  Get back into position after hitting the shot as soon as possible.
  4. Practice.  The backhand will take some time to get used to it.  Have someone watch your mechanics to help you improve, and practice as much as you can.
