Lager can be brewed from scratch or else you can get a home brew kit. Generally, lagers include Pilsners, Bocks, American lagers and special Oktoberfest beers. The following are some tips to help you prepare your own lager home brew.

To home brew lager, you will need:

  • A home brewing kit
  • A large, stainless steel pot
  • An air lock
  • A fermenter
  • A racking cane
  • A thermometer
  • A hydrometer
  • Sterile bottles
  • A siphon hose
  • A long, wooden spoon
  • A bottle capper and caps
  1. To begin, start with a home brewing kit when making a lager for the first time. You can learn the process of brewing with the kit and its ingredients before you attempt the recipe from scratch.
  2. Determine the lager type you wish to brew. German lagers are generally stronger than American lagers. Then there are dark lagers which you can brew. Generally, lager contains bittering hops, finishing hops and malt extract. The hops vary in amount and type depending on the lager type you wish to brew. In case a particular type of beer is your favorite, check its type and buy the home brew kit that matches its taste.
  3. Before starting the process, get all the equipment sterilized, otherwise the bacteria present can kill the yeast that is required for home brewing. Cleanse the area that will be used as the brewing station, and position the assembly at your hands reach.
  4. Proceed as directed in the home brew kit. When attempting a home brew lager for the first time, it is recommended to stick to the recipe. If you do not feel that the result is as expected, then you can change the recipe a little bit to get that perfect taste.
  5. Prepare the area for storing the freshly brewed and bottled lager. It must be stored in a dark and cool place till the brew is all set to be consumed. In case you do not have a basement, store it in such a place that it is away from sunlight or any kind of direct heat to get the best results.
