How To Hunt Deer
People that didn't grow up hunting may find later in life they want to know how to hunt deer. You are never too old to start hunting. Hunting is a good source of natural meat, and with the large populations of deer now present in the United States there is a good supply.
To hunt deer, you need:
- hunting license
- rifle or bow
- ammunition or arrows
-
hunting clothes
- Go to a hunter safety education course. Depending on when you were born this is a requirement in most states before you can get a hunting license. These courses teach how to be safe while hunting, which may save your life in the outdoors.
- Get a hunting license. Most states have a fish and game wildlife agency that licenses hunters. The fees also help pay for wildlife management areas and other things that improve hunting.
- Find a location to hunt. Public lands are available as well as friends you may know that have farmland. Always get the land owner's permission before hunting on private lands.
- Hunt with someone. Experienced hunters are the best mentors, and can teach a lifetime of hunting tips into a small amount of time.
- Scout out the area you plan to hunt before the season starts. Look for signs of deer tracks, especially just after rain when the ground is more easily left with a footprint. Look for rub marks on trees where bucks have been frequenting.
- Set up a deer stand. Once your location is picked to give you the best view to the areas the deer may come through, you'll have a better chance with a deer tree stand. The height the stand gives you allows a better view of the area as well as keeping you out of the straight line view of the deer.
- Deer smell very well. Wash hunting clothes with special detergents that leave no scent. Take a bath with a no-scent soap.
- Wear the right clothes. Some locations require specific hunter orange items, check with your state regulations for the right things to wear.
-
Go out often. Hunting takes a lot of patience. You might get a buck on day one, or you might not see on for a couple of years. Keep at it and eventually you will get a shot.
