How To Impress New Supervisor
Instability in the current job market demands knowledge of how to impress a new supervisor. Since you are fortunate enough to have a job while others are struggling to obtain one, you need to take measures to secure your position.
- Always be on time for work. Being on time does not mean running in the door at the last minute, trying to juggle a cup of coffee while running a shaver over your face. You should be calmly seated at your desk or your report area at least five minutes before the clock strikes the hour.
- Dress neatly. You might need to purchase a wardrobe just for work attire. Don't sag. Dig out that belt your mother gave you for your birthday last year. Don't make the mistake of wearing one of your favorite T-shirts with wording that can be offensive or possibly create a sexual harassment charge.
- Check your street slang at the door. Just because you hear others throwing that four letter word around the work place, does not make it acceptable. Pretend like you are talking with your grandmother in the room.
- Remember the Golden Rule. Treat your coworkers with respect. Do not start rumors or feed into the office gossip. Remember that kid game where you sat in a circle and a message was whispered from one person to the next. How twisted was that message by the time it got to the last person?
- Keep a smile on your face. That doesn't mean sit there like an idiot with a big grin. Keep a cheerful demeanor, even when you want to fume. You will impress your new supervisor by showing them you can maintain control even in the worst of situations.
- Become an expert in your field. You won't be expected to know everything right away, but you should show that you are capable and willing to learn. Use all the resources that are available for training opportunities. When you feel comfortable with your assigned tasks, offer to accept more responsibilities. You want to impress your new supervisor enough to convince them that you are a great candidate for a promotion.
Now more than ever, you need to focus on how to impress your new supervisor. There is a long line of unemployed people waiting for you to mess up so they can grab your paycheck. You don't want to go back to the end of the line.
