Learn how to improve gas mileage so that you can save yourself money both on gas and on repairs due to the extra wear and tear on your vehicle that poor driving causes. Gas has become a huge expense, and you can only expect it to increase in price since oil is not a renewable resource. Be a smart driver to really make a difference and notice your improved gas mileage.

  1. Drive the speed limit and try to stay at or under 60 miles per hour to improve your gas mileage. Anything over 60 mph will generally result in worse gas mileage than your car could get otherwise. However, this does not mean that you should go under the speed limit in areas where the recommended speed is above 60 mph.
  2. Accelerate slowly after coming to a stop in order to improve your gas mileage. When you accelerate quickly you get much worse gas mileage and cause greater wear and tear on your vehicle. Your car will last longer and you will save money by accelerating at a nice, even rate at stop lights and stop signs.
  3. Keep your car tuned up and take good car of it to improve your gas mileage. Make sure to have your oil changed frequently enough and also have your car checked at least once a year for anything that might be wrong with it. This will not only save you money if the mechanics are able to fix the problem before it gets worse, but it could improve your gas mileage as well.
  4. Buy a newer car with better gas mileage to see the best results. This will be particularly helpful if you change from a gas-guzzling SUV to a smaller, fuel efficient car like a hybrid. Most people spend less than half as much on fuel with hybrid cars, so if you have to drive a lot then this is probably the best choice for improving your overall gas mileage.
