How To Improve My Initial Speed In Football

If by improving your initial speed in football you are referring to burst speed or speed off the line, then there are a few things you need to know. Speed for the most part is not something you can learn, you are either fast or you are not. What you can do however, is learn to improve your burst or initial speed with training and technique. Initial speed (burst) can be improved through proper training and technique and will improve your overall speed upfront.

Look at these tips to increase your initial speed and see if they do not improve your burst off the line.

What you will need:

  • Running parachute or elastic running band
  • A friend
  • Weights
  • Ankle weights
  • Room to run

How to improve your initial speed:

Parachute

  1. Find a park or area where you can run unimpeded.
  2. Put on the running parachute.
  3. Sprint over at a minimum of a forty yard distance (suicides).
  4. Make as may passes as you can.
  5. Repeat this daily or at least every other day to increase leg strength.

Elastic running band

  1. Find an open area
  2. Place the elastic running band around your waist.
  3. Have your friend hold the other end.
  4. Sprint away from your friend.
  5. Your friend must hold the band tightly.
  6. Object is to work your body to adjust to quick movement (burst).
  7. Repeat this daily or at least every other day to increase leg strength.

Weights

  1. Find a gym or other place with weights you can safely use.
  2. Generally leg curls and extensions are best.
  3. Find a comfortable weight.
  4. When you do your repetitions do them quickly, mimicking a burst move.
  5. Repeat this daily or at least every other day to increase leg strength.

Ankle Weights

  1. Once you are comfortable with these exercises introduce the ankle weights.
  2. Perform these same exercises.
  3. Repeat this daily or at least every other day to increase leg strength.

The idea is to build leg strength and to get your body accustomed to the shock of quick movements. These exercises plus a solid pair of cleats will help train your body for better initial speed. It just might be enough to gain an advantage over your opponent.
