How To Improve Your Singing
Even if stardom isn’t your goal, you might find it interesting to learn how to improve your singing voice. While not everyone sounds like your favorite artist off the radio, there are still some very simple things you can do to improve your singing. All of these tips can be done in the comfort of your own home. If you feel you need additional help with your singing, you should look into taking voice lessons from a professional vocal coach.
- Focus on your breathing. Your breathing has an extreme effect on how your voice will sound. Try to keep your breathing steady so your voice will not sound shaky. Try placing your hand on your stomach to better feel what it’s like to breathe steady.
- Learn to control your tone. Controlling your tone is something else that has a lot to do with your breathing. Learn to do this by pushing your stomach out when you inhale, which will allow you to completely fill your lungs. When you exhale, bring your stomach slowly in.
- Strengthen those muscles. After learning to control your tone, you’ll shortly notice how much singing can rely on your stomach muscles. The muscles just under your ribcage, known as your diaphragm, are extremely important. Try doing a few crunches every morning to help strengthen your muscles.
- Expand your ribcage. To help you fill your lungs up, you should expand your ribcage. This is fairly simple. Clasp your hands out in front of you while keeping your arms relaxed. Raise your arms about six inches.
- Have a good stance. Even the way you stand has an effect on your breathing. You should stand with your feet about your shoulders’ width apart. Next, bend your knees slightly. Some people find it more comfortable to stand with one foot slightly more forward than the other.
- Stay relaxed. Any tension in your body will have a negative effect on your vocal tone. Make sure your shoulders are not hunched. Looking at yourself in a mirror might help you check your posture. If you are singing in front of a crowd of people and find that looking at them is making you tense up, try shutting your eyes.
- Sway with the music. Focusing on standing perfectly still might make you tense too much. Most people find it natural to move with the music. Gently swaying to the music might help you relax. It will also help you keep your rhythm.
- Drink lots of water. Thick drinks, such as milk, should be avoided before singing. Keeping moisture on your vocal cords will help the overall sound of your voice.
- Most people are capable of hitting only three octaves. Very few people can do more than this. Choose songs that stay in the octaves that you are capable of. Pushing your voice into hitting notes that it can’t can actually hurt your singing voice. Also, if your throat is sore, avoid singing.
- Grab a tape recorder or even better, a video camera. Listening to yourself sing helps you see areas of where you need to improve. If you can video tape yourself while singing, it will help you see how your stance and posture are affecting your voice.
