How To Indy On A Snowboard

So you want to learn how to indy on a snowboard? Fair enough. The indy grab is one of the most basic snowboarding grabs around and is typically one of the first tricks mastered by a beginning snowboarder. Before attempting to learn how to indy on a snowboard, you should already be comfortable riding downhill, without falling, and linking turns. If this is the case read on to learn how to indy on a snowboard.

  1. Spot your jump. Obviously you need air to indy on a snowboard. Pick a jump you’re comfortable with and charge it.
  2. Gain speed. The faster you go, the higher you’ll fly. Don’t go too fast, as you want to remain in control. Make sure you have enough speed to get at least two seconds of hangtime before trying to indy on a snowboard.
  3. As you hit the jump, apply pressure to the back foot and spring yourself airborne. Try to keep the board flat.
  4. Pull your knees up to give yourself a bit more air. This will also make the indy grab easier and give you a bit more time.
  5. To perform an indy on a snowboard reach down between you bindings and grab your rail with your trailing hand. This is the indy grab.
  6. Extend your free hand for style and balance.
  7. Spot your landing and release the grab. Extend out of the crouch, but keep your knees slightly bent upon landing and ride out of the trick.
  8. Once you learn how to indy on a snowboard you can utilize the indy grab in other tricks. Try it out with spin and combo tricks.
