How To Install A Hammock

For a great camping accessory, follow these instructions to learn how to install a hammock. All you need is a hammock and two sturdy trees growing just far enough apart to allow it to hang between them.

  1. Find some trees. If you're camping, you'll most likely want to hang your hammock between two trees rather than lug along a bulky hammock stand. Find two trees far enough apart to allow your hammock to hang properly between them (the ideal distance between the trees depends on the size of your hammock). The trees don't have to be enormous, but they should be sturdy enough to support your weight; look for trees that you can't quite wrap both hands around, and try to find short trees with low-growing branches so you can anchor the hammock above them. Choose leafy trees that will shade your hammock, unless you like to lie in the sun.
  2. Hang your hammock. This part's simple: tie one end of your hammock to one tree and the other end to the other tree. Tie your hammock ropes around the trunk of each tree, just above the first branch. The branch will hold your hammock ropes in place and keep them from sliding down the tree.
  3. Lie back and relax. Be careful getting into your hammock; if you try to go in feet first, you'll fall. Spread the hammock out and sit down on it. From there, you should be able to lie back and enjoy a mellow siesta.
