How To Insulate A Garage

Knowing how to insulate a garage without the assistance of a professional can save you money two-fold. Leaving a hired contractor out of the picture saves a large amount of money during the installation process. The addition of the insulation itself will save you money on heating and cooling the area. Before you begin the project, be sure to have all the tools and supplies ready. You do not want to stop in the middle to run back and forth between stores trying to find what you need. Ask a friend to help. Having a helper to hold the ladder and the insulation roll in place or cut the bottom will keep the time of the project to a minimum. Do not use young children to assist in the job.

To insulate a garage you will need:

• Insulation
• Nail Gun
• Measuring tape
• Box cutter
• Ladder
• Gloves
• Safety Glasses

1. Measure between the bare studs on your garage walls. Before you purchase your materials to insulate a garage, remember it comes in a variety of widths. Measuring between the studs of the walls will allow you to purchase the width best suited for your area. This will eliminate the need to cut off excess insulation material prior to hanging.
2. Put on your safety gear. Insulation irritates the eyes and skin. Long sleeve shirts and pants are preferable when you insulate a garage. If insulation accidentally gets in the eyes, flush immediately.
3. Hold the end of the roll of insulation against the top of the wall between the first set of studs. Use a nail gun to place a nail on each corner and two across the center.
4. Roll the insulation to the bottom of the wall and cut to fit. Use the nail gun to repeat the top nailing pattern to insulate a garage.
5. Add one nail each foot up along the sides to avoid gaping when you insulate a garage.
6. Continue the process completely around to insulate a garage.
