If you and your loved one live far apart, you need to know how to keep a long-distance relationship going. It's important to communicate with your partner frequently, so you'll feel emotionally close despite the physical distance between you. Use a variety of methods to keep in touch, and your relationship will keep going strong.

  1. Talk on the phone. Don't wait for your partner to call you first! Calling to chat shows that you value your long-distance relationship and that you want to keep it going. Clear your schedule at a certain time each day so you'll be able to have long, uninterrupted conversations.
  2. Use the Internet. Email your partner on a regular basis and let him know what you're doing and thinking about. You can also chat through instant messaging, or speak face-to-face using web cams.
  3. Send things in the mail. Snail mail may be slow, but it's one of the most personal means of communication. A hand-written letter or a gift that you made personally and wrapped yourself will mean a lot to your partner. Putting packages in the mail adds variety to your long-distance relationship. Every time your partner opens the mailbox, she'll be eager to find out what information or keepsakes you've sent. This can also help your online and over-the-phone communication, when you talk or email, you can start out by asking if your partner received your latest letter.
  4. Visit whenever you can. Nothing can replace seeing your loved one in person. Prepare for visits ahead of time by listing the things you need to discuss the most. Then, when you see each other, you'll be able to talk about those subjects. When you're together, you should also speak about the things you're doing to keep your long-distance relationship going, and ask your partner if she has any ideas to improve communication between the two of you.
