How To Keep Luggage Safe

Learning how to keep luggage safe is very simple. There are a few tips you can use to keep your luggage safe by reducing the risk of losing your luggage or having your possessions lost or stolen.

  1. Attach two durable luggage I.D. tags to each bags you travel with. If one is ripped off, there will be another tag on your luggage. Use a colorful tag or marker that you'll find easy to recognize. This will prevent people from picking up your bag by mistake.
  2. For your personal safety, don't place your name and address visibly on the outside of your luggage. Put identification details on the inside your suitcase, along with information such as your cell phone number, hotel or destination phone number, along with an email address. This can help the airline or carrier trace you if your luggage is mishandled.
  3. Invest in a safety lock that the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) can use with a "master" key to open your bag. This helps prevent any damage to your luggage if it's opened for inspection.
  4. It's not safe to place valuables nor money in your suitcase. Carry these in your hand luggage or on your person at all times. Use a money belt underneath your clothes for extra security.
  5. To keep your clothes and other possessions safe and clean, always pack liquid items in watertight plastic bags to prevent leaks. Carry additional plastic zip bags with you.
  6. Keep your eyes on your personal possessions. Don't look away, even for a short while. Keep your possessions safe by not leaving them with someone you've just met at your hotel or the airport. They may have vanished by the time you return!
  7. Store cash, travelers checks, credit or debit cards, tickets and passports in a safety deposit box or a safe in your locked room when not in use. They can be stolen if left on the bed or an unlocked bag in your hotel room.
  8. Keep possessions out of sight: Keep your valuables safe from the sight of others. Never leave them unattended overnight in your car. Make sure your car is locked when parked during the day. Lock it securely, and keep all items hidden from sight.
