- Diet, diet, diet. You daily diet is a key factor in keeping your heart healthy. What you put into your body directly affects your heart health. Eating large amounts of processed foods only hurts your heart. Making sure you eat fresh fruits and veggies is a great way to keep your heart healthy. Lean meats and complex carbohydrates, such as whole wheat bread, are also part of a heart healthy diet. Limiting your intake of simple carbohydrates, such as starchy potatoes and white bread, will also keep your heart healthy. Carbohydrates are broken down into sugar, which means there is a higher amount of glucose in your blood. Higher amounts of glucose only help lead to heart disease. Eating fried foods is also a big no-no when trying to keep your heart healthy. Fatty foods can lead to high cholesterol and high blood pressure, which can lead to heart disease.
- Get out and exercise. Exercise is a must when it comes to keeping your heart healthy. Along with diet, exercise can really make the difference in whether or not you have a healthy heart. Exercise strengthens the heart and helps it pump larger amounts of blood throughout the body. If you exercise you will have a lower resting heart rate, which means less strain is put on your heart. Just taking a 30 minute walk a couple of days a week will go a long way in keeping your heart healthy. Doing simple chores around the house is also another way to get in a little exercise. You don't even have to go to a gym to get the daily exercise you need. Just getting up and doing some sort of activity will help you keep your heart healthy.
- Break the bad habits. Smoking is a habit that must be broken in order to keep your heart healthy. Smoking can cause heart disease in and of itself. It can also cause high blood pressure, which can lead to heart disease. Overeating is another bad habit you have to break. Try to chew your food slowly and put your fork or spoon down between bites. This will give you time to feel fuller without eating too much. Another thing you need to do is limit fast food. Fast food is convenient, but not necessarily good on your heart. It's best to try to prepare your own meals so you know exactly what you are putting in your body.

Setting goals is important in keeping your heart healthy. Make a goal to exercise three to five days a week. A 30 minute walk around your neighborhood is a great way to end your day. Also, plan out your meals and buy food for an entire week. This way, you won't be as tempted to run out for fast food.
