If you are a homeowner, a major concern you will face is the issue of how to know if you have termites. Termites are the scourge of homeowners everywhere, as they can cause extensive damage to a home, leading to expensive repairs and even a loss in property value. The following strategies will help you in protecting your investment from these destructive pests.
- Look for sawdust. One way to tell if you have termites is to check for sawdust or wood pulp around your home or underneath any wood construction therein, such as logs or the fence. If no one has been doing any work with wood recently, this could be a sign of an infestation.
- Mud shelter tubes. Another way to detect termites is to search around the bases of toilets or foundation walls, and also any place where the soil meets the base of the home for brown, mud-like tubes. If you see one and it's moist, disturb it with a stick and see if there are "white ants" inside. Those are termites at work.
- Flying pests. If you see a swarm of flying insects, or you see their discarded wings, especially by your windows, this is definitely a warning that you have termites infesting your home. They may be expanding from an existing nest in the home, or migrating in from somewhere else.
- Check for signs of wood damage. Another sign that you have termites attacking your home, is when you begin to notice creaking noises when you walk on the floor, or changes in sounds when you knock on woodwork. An increasingly hollow sound is the result of termites eating the wood inside the walls.
Tips: Be sure to check your home every month for termites, especially during the spring and fall months.
