How To Learn Wide Receiver Plays
It is important to find out how to learn wide receiver plays if you want to help your team. Knowing the proper pass route to run is critical during an offensive possession, so you must memorize the playbook. If your team’s offense has many wide receiver plays, you should spend some extra time studying them until you are proficient at each type of pass pattern.
Things you need:
- Playbook
- Ask your coach for help if you do not understand certain wide receiver plays. If there are plays in the playbook that are confusing, you still must know how to execute the proper pass pattern. You may get yelled at by the coach, but it is better to ask a question during a team meeting than to go out on the field and miss a pass because you ran the wrong route.
- Learn wide receiver plays with your teammates. Practice your pass patterns with other receivers on the team so you can get the routes down cold. Watch your teammates when they run a pattern to see if you can learn from them. If you have some pointers to give your teammates about their pass routes, do so in a positive manner so they will return the favor.
- Be sure to consult with your quarterback as you learn wide receiver plays. It will not do much good running the right route if the timing between you and the quarterback is off. Make sure you spend some time practicing each pattern with the quarterback so you can develop a mutual trust on the field.
- Make some suggestions to the coach about wide receiver plays. For example, if you are running a ten-yard out pattern and the defender is playing off you a lot during the game, tell the coach. He may have you adjust the pattern so you can get open for a big play.
