How to link on Twitter is a very easy process with multiple solutions depending on your Twitter application and personal preference. Some Twitter applications have an auto shorten function that automatically shortens your Twitter links. It is considered somewhat of a social media faux pas to copy a full URL link on Twitter statuses; not to mention, taking up more of your precious allotted 140 characters! Read on to find out how simple it is to link on Twitter.

To link on Twitter, you will first need:

  • A computer
  • Internet
  • A Twitter account
  • Twitter application (optional)
  1. Open Your Web Browser - Lets get this basic step out of the way.  Using internet web browser tabs will be helpful for the next step in establishing Twitter links.
  2. Go to http://bit.ly - This is a great URL shortening tool to help economize the 140 characters or less of Twitter messages and maximize the space for your tweet (or message).
  3. Click on the "Tools" Link - Located on the right hand side of the bit.ly homepage.
  4. Scroll down to the "Standard bit.ly Bookmarket" subtitle - Click and drag the "Shorten with bit.ly" link to your web browser toolbar to add it to your browser. An image on the site gives you a visual of where to click and drag.
  5. Open Your Twitter Account - You can use the Twitter page on your browser, using another browser tab, or any preferred Twitter application.
  6. Find the Website You'd Like to Link - Use another web browser tab to find the website you'd like to link on Twitter.
  7. Click "Shorten with bit.ly" on your web browser toolbar - Make sure your web browser window is open to the website you'd like to link before clicking the web browser tool. This will prompt a new browser tab to open that will automatically shorten the URL link.
  8. Copy the shortened URL - You can either choose to highlight the shortened URL link by itself, by clicking on the "copy" button, or copy the automated headline with URL link that bit.ly creates by highlighting the block of text and pressing ctrl + c on a PC or command + c on a Mac.
  9. Paste it onto Twitter to submit your Tweet - Use ctrl + p or command + p to paste it onto your Twitter application or Twitter on the web. Click on the submit button to post your link to the tweetverse.

Using bit.ly is an easy and quick way to add Twitter links to your messages. Following these steps will have you Tweeting like a pro in no time.
