How To Locate 1996 Toyota Corolla Starter Solenoid

Learn how to locate a 1996 Toyota Corolla’s starter solenoid.  If you can’t get your car to start, then you might assume that your Corolla’s starter is dead.  But in many cases, it might not be the starter that’s causing the problem.  Time and again, the electrics and solenoids associated with your Corolla’s starting system can fail, leading to the no-start condition that’s sometimes wrongly blamed on the starter itself.  Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on replacing your starter, you can simply find and diagnose the issue at little to no cost.

The starter solenoid is one of two major components of an average starter, the other being the starter motor itself.  The solenoid’s functions are receiving current from the battery supply, which is relayed to the starter motor, as well as activating the drive gear that initially turns the flywheel.

What you’ll need:

  • A set of wrenches
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  1. Locating the starter. The starter on a 1996 Toyota Corolla is located at the back of the motor, near the firewall. In order to get to it, you must remove the air intake box and hoses. It might be easier to remember that the starter is always located where the transmission bell housing attaches to the engine block. If you remove the starter, you can even see where it attaches to the teeth on the flywheel.
  2. Finding the solenoid. The solenoid is actually located on the starter itself, as a smaller cylinder-shaped part attached to the rest of the starter motor.
  3. How to replace the solenoid. The solenoid is normally held together by a few nuts or Phillips head screws. Remove these screws, then pull or rotate the housing in order to remove the solenoid.
