It takes time, consistency and hard work. You should start by preparing yourself weeks, if not months in advance. As Jenny Hadfield, a certified running coach, author, and endurance athlete explains, “having at least six to eight months of training before the marathon is a must.”
- Training is a necessity. The day of the marathon will not be a problem if you have worked sufficiently hard enough during your training. You may want to try a few shorter races as a way of preparing for a marathon, like a 5K, 10K or a half-marathon.
- Follow a plan. Some marathon organizing bodies offer individual training programs, group training or detailed training calendars. The Internet also has many websites devoted to running with free training regimens. Work a plan that you feel comfortable with, one that pushes you to improve and that builds up your muscles and endurance to survive the grueling experience of running 26.2 miles. Use all the tools you can get your hands on; they will help to get to that finish line at the end of the race.
- Start training early. Start eight months before your marathon. Set realistic but challenging goals for each day, week and month to get there. Recovery weeks are important; every three to four weeks you should rest, do stretching exercises and keep the workouts light for a few days. Training for a marathon requires ample time; make sure you dedicate enough to succeed on the big day.
