Battling cancer is one of the most challenging tasks a person may ever face in life. Not only is the disease a physical battle, but a mental one, too. Cancer survivors are eager to return their body to a healthy state. Recommendations for a cancer survivor are no different than those for anyone else who wants to achieve a healthy lifestyle. With moderate exercise and a good diet, overall well-being is within reach. The American Cancer Society has some dietary recommendations for cancer survivors who wish to drop a few pounds. Here, you can learn exactly how to lose weight for cancer survivors.

  1. Get to a healthy weight. A healthy body weight is necessary in order to be in good health. If you have several pounds to lose, set a weekly goal. Remember, it is not healthy to lose more than 2 pounds per week. Count your calories. Make sure the calories you take in are beneficial to your body. Empty calories will leave you unsatisfied. Keep a food log to keep track of everything you eat each day.
  2. Balance is key. It is important to eat a balanced diet. Consume 4-5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Be sure to add plenty of berries to your diet. The darker the berry the better. These are rich in antioxidants. A diet with an emphasis on fruits and vegetables, is believed to reduce the odds of cancer reoccurring.
  3. Variety is the spice. Eating a variety of foods is essential to getting the vitamins and nutrients your body needs to become strong. Choose healthy fats. Select foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish. Keep the saturated and trans fat consumption to a minimum. Lean meats, eggs, and nuts are ideal choices. Carbohydrates are fine, as long as they are the right kind of carbs. Opt for whole-grain bread and cereals over white bread and sugary treats.
  4. Get advice on supplements. Avoid taking too many supplements. Some people think that since vitamins are good for you, they can't hurt you. Taking too many supplements can be dangerous. Ask your doctor if taking a multivitamin daily is what you need. Cancer survivors should always consult their physician before taking any vitamins or supplements.
