For those who live with low hormone production of the thyroid gland, it can be a real struggle to learn how to lose weight with hypothyroidism. An under-active thyroid can mean deterioration of the metabolic rate inside the body, which can cause weight gain. Symptoms of hypothyroidism include fatigue, dry skin, achy joints, and even an irregular heart rate. Though weight gain is a major side effect of hypothyroidism, it is possible to lose weight with this disease by following a few simple steps.

  1. Get thyroid medication from a doctor. Trial and error will help you and your doctor assume the correct dosage of thyroid medication, which can help your body's metabolism to stabilize. Some patients find that they can lose weight with hypothyroidism simply by taking prescribed medications according to the dosage schedule.
  2. Check for drug interferences. Some supplements and foods can alter the results of thyroid medications. These include calcium supplements, estrogen, soy, and calcium-fortified orange juice.
  3. Exercise regularly. It is important to keep your heart rate at an elevated rate for at least two hours per week. Hit the gym with a friend or go for a quiet, but brisk walk. Aim to exercise at least five days a week.
  4. Watch your calorie consumption. Even if an underactive thyroid is brought into check with medications, it may be impossible to lose weight if you do not eat a healthy and nutritious diet. The average person can safely consume a 2,000 calorie diet, though people looking to lose weight may want to restrict those calories to around 1,500.
