Learning how to make a braided rug is easy, it just takes a bit of time and planning. You can use whatever fabric you like for your braided rug, but one of the cheapest and softest braided rugs is made from old T-shirts. You can use three different colors, all one color, or any other combination. Making a braided rug is fun and easy and is a good way to personalize a room. These type of rugs also make nice gifts.
To make a braided rug you will need:
- Sewing needle
- Thread for sewing (this can be the same color as the rug, to blend in, or contrasting to give a decorative effect)
- T-shirts, at least three
- Start at the bottom of T-shirt, and cut around the shirt in a long spiral up to right underneath the underarms. The strip of shirt being cut should be around an inch thick. Try to cut evenly so the rug won’t end up bumpy. Repeat with other shirts, and roll the long strips into balls. Now you’re ready to braid.
- To start braiding, it’s helpful to have another person hold the three ends together after knotting while you begin braiding three strips together. Once you have about a foot braided, you can tie the end of the braid around a door knob or bed post for stability and keep braiding until you have the desired length of braid. Make sure to braid tightly so that the braided rug will be sturdy and the braid easy to sew.
- Thread your sewing needle. Begin at one end of the braid and begin coiling the braid into a flat circle. Stitch the flat circle together as you wind each few inches. This is the most time-consuming part of the rug-making. Make sure to take your time and sew the stitches neatly and close together to make the rug look neat and be strong. When you reach the end of the braid, tuck the end to what will be the wrong side of rug and sew securely in place.
