How To Make Butter
It's so easy to learn how to make butter! It only takes one ingredient to make it in its most simple form, but get a little creative and the options are endless. Add a little cinnamon and sugar for sweet butter for baked sweet potatoes or on toast. Add garlic and savory seasonings for making your own garlic bread.
To make butter, you need:
- 2 cups heavy whipping cream
- 1/4 teaspoon salt (optional)
- Pour the whipping cream into the bowl of a stand mixer. Add salt if desired. Turn mixer on and mix on a medium low speed until the mixture is frothy. Increase the mixer speed to high and continue to mix for several minutes--at least 10.
- Process on high until the mixture separates. Pour off any accumulated liquid (buttermilk). (Save the buttermilk and use in place of water in baking recipes.)
Place the butter into a bowl and press it with the back of a spoon to remove additional liquid.
Alternately, make butter by putting ingredients into a large jar with a tight-fitting lid and shake vigorously until butter forms--this can take awhile, but works the same way!
Impress your friends and family and press the butter you make into molds and other shapes and allow to form in the refrigerator. Once you make butter, store it in the refrigerator to extend the shelf life. Stored in the refrigerator, homemade butter has a shelf life of a week or two, but keep it well wrapped to keep it from absorbing odors.
