How to Make Football Plays

Many new football coaches run into some trouble when learning how to make football plays.  This part of the game is often referred to as the x's and o's in football coaching.  Regardless of what happens in the play, every player on the offense and defense has a role or assignment in every single play.  Let's talk about some of the steps that need to be taken to make football plays.

  1. When making football plays, the first thing that needs to be done is setting up where all of the players will be positioned.  Normally, the offensive players are signified by o's and the defensive players as x's.  When making a football play, it is important to have both the offense and defense drawn, so the players know where to stand opposed to their counterparts across the ball from them.  If a team uses different formations, every player on the field needs to know exactly what position is expected of them and where they need to be on the field.
  2. The next thing to do is to give each player on the team that you are coaching an assignment for that play.  This can be done by drawing an arrow pointing in the direction that player.  Another thing that can be done is drawing a sketch that points to the player that the player should be blocking.  Remember, when coaching a football team, each and every player on the field needs to be fully aware of their assignment.  When drawing up a play, every single player needs to have it made clear to them exactly what needs to be done each play.  If a player needs to act like they are going out for a pass on a run play, let that player know that.  If a player needs to block, then they need to know who to block.
  3. It is important to start slow when learning how to make football plays.  Make sure the team has a few football plays mastered before moving on to adding more football plays.  Trying to teach a team new plays when they are still unclear about how to properly run they currently have is a step in the wrong direction. Repetition needs to be done, over and over, until each play in the book is completely mastered by all players.

When coaching football, learning how to make football plays is one of the most important aspects of the job.  It is important that every single player that is being coached knows exactly where to be.  If the players on the football field do not know where they need to be, there is very little chance for success.  An offense that knows all of their plays extremely well has a much better chance for success.  A coach that has great success teaching his players exactly what their assignments are for every play so they have no trouble recognizing their responsibility for each particular play, will have a great chance to be a very successful coach.
