Determining how to make friends in college may initially seem like a challenging task. Your time in college will undoubtedly be one of the most important chapters of your life and having good friends in college will help enhance your enjoyment of your college years. You can use these strategies to help you make friends in college.

Things you'll need:

  • Access to on-campus clubs/athletics
  • Study group(s)
  • Roommates and/or neighbors
  1. Join a club or team. Consider your interests and hobbies and see if your college offers a club centered around that interest. If you play a particular sport, look into joining your college's team if one is available. You're guaranteed to share at least one common interest with people you meet through a club or team and you'll likely have opportunities to see them on a regular basis through team or club meetings.

  2. Get to know your classmates. To make friends in college, chat with your fellow classmates, especially those that you notice share more than one class with you (you may discover that you share the same major). See if anyone might be interested in starting a study group or you can join an already existing group. This would allow you to get to know people and make friends while also getting necessary study time in.

  3. Try your roommate or neighbors. Having a roommate is a great way to begin to make friends in college. You can share activities such as meal time, study time and leisure activities. Consider asking your roommate to introduce you to some of his other friends to expose you to more potential friends. If you don't have a roommate, strike up a conversation with a neighbor, find out what you might have in common and see if you can meet up for a shared activity, such as going to a meal together.
