If you are an ice cream lover who longs for the taste of flavors that are a little more exotic than what you will find at Baskin Robbins, you might want to take the time to learn how to make gelato. As a bonus, gelato has much less fat than ice cream and is tremendously flavorful. If you want to make restaurant quality gelato, you can always purchase a gelato maker. However, you can very easily make this Italian treat right in your own home by following these easy steps.

To make gelato you will need:

  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  1. Pour the milk into a boiler and heat on low.
  2. Add the salt and sugar. Stir until it is dissolved.
  3. Gently beat the egg yolks. Place a double boiler on the stove and bring the water in the bottom to a boil. Once it is boiling, place the egg yolks in the top boiler.
  4. Stir the milk mixture into the eggs with a whisk.
  5. Cook until the mixture has thickened. You will need to whisk the mixture constantly while it is cooking.
  6. Chill the mixture overnight.
  7. Add vanilla and mix into the gelato.
  8. You may also add fruit at this time. If you want a flavored gelato, you can add three cups of fruit puree before serving. Stir in the fruit and then serve immediately.

You will love this delicious gelato, especially since you can create it in any fruit flavor that you wish. Keep experimenting with different fruits until you find one that you can't live without.
