Need to know how to make a hamster cage? You've come to the right place. This article will tell you how to make a hamster cage along with other precautionary tips. Overall, the process of making a hamster cage doesn't take very long and doesn't take very much effort.

To make a hamster cage you will need:

  • Aquarium
  • Some small pieces of wood
  • A brick
  • Pegboard
  • Hammer
  • Nails
  • Saw
  • Small animal bedding
  1. Find a nice sized aquarium. Since hamsters like to spend most of the night up and running around, you'll want to find a good size aquarium. A twenty gallon tank will suit the hamster nicely. However, if you plan on building tunnel systems and nest boxes you should buy a larger tank. Remember to make sure that you have a way to secure the top of the tank.
  2. Make a bed for the hamster. Place a layer of the bedding at the bottom of the aquarium. Make the layer at least an inch thick. Your hamster will naturally rearrange the bedding to its own taste.
  3. Secure the top of the tank. Cut a piece of the pegboard big enough to completely cover the top of the tank, with at least an extra inch on each side. Then, cut some air holes into the pegboard. Now, take the small pieces of wood and nail them to the edges of the pegboard, so when you place the pegboard on the top of the aquarium the wood will hang over the edges. This will add little extra weight to the pegboard so it will be secure onto the top of the aquarium, which is fast becoming a hamster cage. This will help to prevent the hamster from escaping.
  4. Make sure the hamster doesn't escape from the hamster cage. In addition to nailing the wood to the edges of the pegboard, there is another way to make sure the hamster doesn't escape. Place the brick on top of the pegboard to further secure the top of the aquarium. It may seem like an unnecessary precaution, but placing a brick on top of the pegboard is just one more thing you can do to make sure the hamster can't get out. Just make sure the pegboard is new and sturdy and not rotting. If the pegboard is in bad shape it could collapse under the weight of the bricks. Also, make sure you leave the air holes uncovered by the brick. You want want your hamster to run out of air!
