If you're hosting an end of the year party, then you need to know how to make homemade New Year decorations. New Year's Eve is a time for making resolutions, and if your resolution is to save money, your first step can be to make homemade New Year decorations for your party.

To make homemade New Year decorations, you will need:

  • Fabric, paper, cardboard or foam core
  • Markers, paint, or sequins
  • Leftover Christmas decorations and wrappings
  • Sticks
  • A vase
  • Spray paint
  1. Celebrate the coming year. New Year's Eve is all about the year to come, and your decorations should reflect that fact. Find a way to display the year number prominently at your party. For example, you could cut out the numbers from a piece of paper, cardboard, fabric or foam core, decorate them with marker, paints, or sequins, and display them anywhere you have open space. If you have collections of similar items (coins, buttons, candles, necklaces), use them to form the year number in surprising places.
  2. Repurpose Christmas. New Year's Eve comes so soon after Christmas that it seems excessive to start a whole new decorating scheme. Save yourself time and money by repurposing appropriate Christmas decorations for your New Year's celebration. Use left over Christmas ribbons in white, silver and gold (or buy some extra at the after Christmas sales) to spruce up your mantle, staircase, and table. Don't be stingy; the more ribbon, the better. Accent with candles and baubles that fit the color scheme. White or silver wrapping paper can also be used to wrap favors or as a disposable table cloth.
  3. Soften the look. You don't need a sewing machine or sewing skills to decorate for your New Year's Eve party with fabric. Simply buy a few yards in white, silver, or gold, and use to drape over mantles, tables, or chairs. Tie the fabric with left over Christmas ribbons to finish the look. Place white bulb LED light strands under the fabric to add some extra sparkle.
  4. Bring nature into the mix. A collection of sticks gathered in a vase and tied with a ribbon can add modern elegance to your decorating scheme. For extra glamour, spray the sticks with silver or gold spray paint.
