Learning how to make a homemade USB guitar cable can expand the uses of your guitar. Having a USB connection for your guitar can make it easy to record songs on your computer or hook it up to other electronics that use the USB cable system. If you’re ready to build your very own homemade USB guitar cable, then take a look at this list of items that you’ll need to accomplish your task.
To build a homemade guitar USB cable, you will need the following items:
- Guitar cable
- Cable w/ USB attachment
- Utility knife
- Electrical tape
- Strip your wire. The first step to building a homemade USB guitar cable will be working with your wires. Take the ends of both of your wires and strip about two inches of tubing off the wires. If you’ve done this part right, you should have two wires with the copper ends hanging out. Don’t accidentally cut the copper, or your wires may no longer work correctly. If you happened to accidentally cut your copper wires, use your scissors to cut off this damaged area and re-strip your wire.
- Connect your wires. After you’ve stripped your wires, you’ll be ready to connect the USB wiring to your guitar wiring. To do this, you’ll need to wrap the copper ends from each set of cables around each other. Try and make multiple wraps with your copper ends and keep them as tight as possible. Be careful when wrapping your wires; they tend to be rather sharp and can easily prick you or damage the exposed wire ends. To finish this step, wrap electrical tape around the copper ends and don’t leave any exposed copper or wiring!
If upon completion of these steps you find that your homemade USB guitar cable isn’t working, make sure to thoroughly check your wiring for any nicks or cuts. The smallest cut in your wire can cause your USB guitar cable to not work. Some of these cuts can be sealed up with electrical tape, but most of them will require having to remove the bad spot in the wiring and re-connecting your ends following the above steps. Once you’re done checking your wiring and sealing your ends with electrical tape, you’ll have your very own homemade USB guitar cable!
