How To Make Ice Luges

Ice luges can be a great addition to a party. The luges can be a fun way to an ice-cold shot or a spectacle reminiscent of someone’s fraternity days.

  1. Get the ice block. Sometimes you can buy a large block of ice from a store that sells them to make ice sculptures. A less expensive option is to freeze your own ice block using a large plastic tub. The size of the block is limited only by the size of your freezer.  Be sure to plan ahead as a large block will take a few days to freeze solid.

  2. Planning the canals. Once the ice block is frozen, you will need to cut the canals in the ice luge. You will generally want two canals on a large block of ice or one down the center of a smaller block. This will determine how many people can drink from the bottom of the luge at the same time. The canals should wind around a little so that the liquid will have longer to chill before it reaches the bottom. This will also give the ice luge a better look.

  3. Cutting the canals. A knife or a screwdriver can work to cut the channels through the ice luge. A router with a half inch bit can be an easier way to cut the canals into the ice. Pouring hot water down the canals will help to smooth them out.

  4. Use the ice luge. Make sure the luge is angled in a secure position before anyone tries to use it. You will want to have one person at the top of the luge to pour liquor into the top of the canals and another person to be sure the luge stays secure. The person drinking from the luge will put their mouth at the bottom of the canal. Pour the liquid into the top and a few seconds later, it will reach the bottom cold and ready to drink.
