How To Make Jeans Skinny

Here’s the skinny on how to update your old wide leg jeans by knowing how to make jeans skinny. You can make your jeans skinny style if you have some patience and a sewing machine. The basic principle in making jeans skinny is to narrow the leg of the jeans.

What you need:

  • Sewing machine
  • Ruler or measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Straight pins
  • Hard flat surface to work such as a table
  • Jeans
  • Thread to match jeans

Follow these steps to make your jeans skinny:

  1. Select the jeans you want to alter.
  2. Get out your straight pins.
  3. Take the jeans you have selected to make skinny and turn them inside out. Put your jeans on in the inside out position.
  4. While you are in the jeans, grasp the inseam (the seam in the inside of your leg) and pull it tighter to your leg. Note: Do not pull skintight or you will split the seam if you sit down.
  5. Pinch sides together and place a straight pin vertically along the pinch close to your leg. Repeat this every three inches from the top of leg to the bottom at the ankle.
  6. Repeat on the other leg.
  7. While jeans are pinned, try carefully squatting and sitting to make sure that you have not pinned them too tight.
  8. Carefully step out of the jeans.
  9. Flatten jeans out on a table or other flat surface and check that the pins are in a straight vertical line.
  10. Make any adjustments to the pins as needed.
  11. Repeat on other leg.
  12. Thread sewing machine with appropriate color thread to match jeans.
  13. Beginning at the crotch, slowly stitch jeans along the outside edge of pins, pulling out pins as you sew.
  14. Repeat on other leg.
  15. When you are finished sewing both legs, lay the jeans on a flat surface and measure the amount of material from the original jeans seam to the new seam you stitched. If the measured amount is less than one inch do nothing. If the measured amount is over one inch, cut the excess material ¼ inch away from the seam you stitched down the entire leg.
  16. Repeat on other leg.
  17. Cut excess thread from where sewing starts and stops.
  18. Turn jeans right side out.
  19. Try on your new jeans.
