If you want to win at a game of Mah Jongg, you will need to know how to make a kong in Mah Jongg. Making a kong in Mah Jongg is a great strategy to get the points you need to win the game. There are two methods for making a kong when playing Mah Jongg: the open kong and the closed kong. While both methods are worth serious points, the 32 points for the closed kong make it more valuable than the promise of sixteen points offered by the open kong.
- Start an open kong with an exposed pung. Building an open kong on an exposed pung is one of the easier strategies for making a kong in Mah Jongg. If you have an exposed pung you can add to it by drawing a tile from the head. If the tile that you draw from the head matches the tiles in your pung, you have created an open kong and have given yourself another sixteen points towards winning the game.
- Claim tiles from other players. Using a hidden pung to create an open kong is another strategy for making a kong when playing Mah Jongg. If you know you have a hidden pung, hold on to it until another player discards the tile that you need to make a kong. Once another player puts down the tile that you need to make a kong, you can claim it by taking it off of the table at your next turn instead of drawing a tile from the head. This method for making a kong in Mah Jongg may take a little longer, but it allows you to keep your strategy a secret.
- Hit them with the closed kong. The closed kong is one of the sneakiest methods for making a kong in Mah Jongg. In order to build to the closed kong you need to already have a hidden kong or hidden pung in your tiles. If the tile that you draw from the head on your next turn matches the tiles in your hidden kong or hidden pung, you have the fourth tile that you need for the 32-point closed kong. Once you have established your closed kong, turn over one of the tiles in your hidden kong so that the other players know you have a 32-point closed kong instead of the sixteen-point open kong. This method of making a kong while playing Mah Jongg may take some time to build, but if you can hold out, it will put plenty of points on your board.
