Ever wonder how to make leather shoes? Knowing how to make leather shoes can certainly come in handy. You never know when you are going to need to make a pair of leather shoes. The art of making shoes is one that is perfected over time. If shoemaking interests you, then there is no better time to learn than the present!
In order to make leather shoes, you will need:
- Thick needles
- Sewing machine
- Cotton thread
- Rubber (optional)
- Rubber cement (optional)
- Hole punch
- Gather your leather. You can use scraps from an old leather jacket or vest. You can also buy the leather if you prefer. Soft leather is easier on the sewing machine, but generally not as comfortable on the feet. The choice is yours.
- Design the shoe. You will need to create the design so you know what you want the shoe to look like. You can use an existing pair of shoes as your guide or you can trace your foot for an exact fit. Section the design into pieces to determine what you will need to cut. There are patterns already designed on the web free of charge. This may be the easiest route.
- Trace the pattern onto the leather. Trace the pattern on the side you will not see. Carefully cut out the leather pieces. In most cases, there is the part you see and a duplicate piece for lining. Use a hole puncher to cut holes for the laces.
- Begin sewing. You can then begin sewing the edges together. You want to avoid pinning the leather in place. Try using clips instead. Pins will leave marks in the leather. Reinforce stitches in the sole. If you want soft-sole shoes, you will use leather for the bottom of the shoe. For rubber-soled shoes, you will need to use rubber cement to attach the finished shoe to the soles.
