How To Make Marinara Sauce Using Fresh Tomatoes

Learn how to make marinara sauce using fresh tomatoes three different ways .Marinara sauce is very similar to the puttanesca sauce which actually is a word for prostitute. Puttanesca has olives, anchovies and capers. In other words it is a bare sauce.  Marinara sauce is traditionally served with parmesan cheese, unlike puttanesca sauce. The marinara sauce using fresh tomatoes can be used in a variety of ways from the base of a lasagna dish to pizza. If using for pizza, drain some of the liquid off the sauce first. 

Fresh Marinara Sauce With Basil

Ingredients:

  • 1-1/2 pounds tomatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 2 Tablespoons of virgin olive oil
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 onion, peeled and chopped
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 12 fresh basil leaves, julienne chop
  • Salt and Pepper

Directions:

  1. In a large skilled heat the oil.  Add in the onion and cook until translucent.
  2. Add in the chopped tomatoes, basil, water and garlic. Cook until the tomatoes are soft.
  3. Remove from the heat and put in a sieve and strain the pulp. Return the pulp minus the basil leaves to the skillet.
  4. Heat the marinara sauce using  fresh tomatoes and add in the seasoning. Marinara sauce is great on spaghetti and served with French bread.

Marinara Sauce Using Fresh Tomatoes and Oregano

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound fresh tomatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 1 small can tomato paste
  • 2 Tablespoons virgin olive oil
  • 2 large onions, peeled and chopped
  • 1 green pepper, chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • 1 Tablespoon dried oregano
  • 1 cup water
  • Salt and Pepper

Directions:

  1. Place the virgin olive oil in a large skillet and heat. Add in the onions and green pepper.  Cook the onions and pepper until soft and then add in the garlic.
  2. Cook for one minute more. Add in the chopped tomatoes, tomato paste, water and seasonings. Cook the marinara sauce with fresh tomatoes for one hour or until the tomatoes are soft and done.
  3. Place half of the marinara sauce in a blender and blend on high speed. Return the sauce back to the skillet and taste to make sure the seasoning is correct.
  4. Bring the sauce to boil once more and cook for an additional five minutes. This marinara sauce using fresh tomatoes is great for pasta or as a pizza sauce.

Italian Marinara Sauce

Ingredients:

  • 1-1/2 pounds fresh tomatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 3 Tablespoons virgin olive oil
  • 2 carrots, finely chopped
  • 2 stalks of celery, finely chopped
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 Tablespoon tomato paste
  • Salt and Pepper
  • 6 fresh basil leaves, chopped

Directions:

  1. In a large skillet put the oil and heat. Add in the carrots, celery and onions and cook until soft.
  2. Add in the chopped tomatoes, garlic, tomato paste and water. Bring the marinara sauce with fresh tomatoes to a boil.
  3. Add in the seasoning and fresh basil leaves. Cook the marinara sauce until it thickens approximately 45 minutes to one hour.
  4. Remove from the stove and allow to cool slightly. Use this wonderful marinara sauce with anything Italian such as linguine noodles and clams.
