How To Make A Musical Instrument

In ancient times, thousands of yeas ago, certain primeval men got bored and wanted to know how to make a musical instrument. Looking around, they saw a large bull horn and, after a bit of discussion, elected to make it into a blowing horn. To this day, certain men looking to make a musical instrument can grab a bull horn and, using a few modern power tools, make a blowing horn in just a few minutes. Here's what you'll need to make a blowing horn musical instrument just like the ancients:

  • A bull horn
  • A drill
  • A saw
  • 5/8" flat wood bit
  • 1/4" standard twist bit
  1. Find a bull horn. The first step to making a musical instrument like a blowing horn is finding a suitable horn to carry the kind of tone you're looking for. Small horns will carry a treble sound, while larger ones will, of course, have more bass.
  2. Cut the horn. Using your saw, cut the pointed edge off your horn. There's no right way to do this, but keep in mind that the horn should fit comfortably on your lips-so don't cut too much off! It's best to err on the side of caution and cut too little off the horn rather than too much.
  3. Drill the mouthpiece. The next step in making a musical instrument like a blowing horn is to drill the mouthpiece. Begin this by taking the 1/4" standard twist bit and drilling a hole through the end of the horn. Next, take the 5/8" flat wood bit and drill about half way into the previous hole, effectively making a mouthpiece that tapers down.

Once you've drilled your mouthpiece, put 'er up to your lips and give a blow! If you did it right, provided that you actually know how to play a blowing horn, you'll hear a strong reverberation emit from the horn itself. You've just made a musical instrument; now get out there and blow one for the ancients!
