Learning how to make a short film shouldn't be a hard task at all. In fact, it can be easy as pie to accomplish. You don't even need people to help you at all and your subject doesn't have to be human either.

To make a short film, you will need:

  • Video camera
  • Tapes (optional)
  • Memory cards (optional)
  • Desktop or laptop
  • Editing software
  1. Start filming! There is no secret on making a short film. Grab your video camera, point it at something, and start shooting. In this case, making a short film is a one-man (or woman) show. Go outside and film what you see. Everything out there in the real world has a story to tell, and is waiting for you to come along and film it. Hit the "REC" button and go!

Tips:

  • There are cameras available for all budgets. Some video cameras will need digital video tape, memory cards, or nothing at all. Some video cameras come with internal hard drives or memory that eliminate the need for external memory capture devices.
  • Some cameras come with minimal or multiple features. Depending on how your final project comes out you may need an editing bay to put the piece of your film together.
  • There are various editing software made for the average consumer and some already come pre-installed in your desktop computer or laptop. If you don't have an editing suite you can find places that will edit your material for you. Some schools have editing classes or programs that can help you. Editing is secondary. All you need to worry about is shooting your short film first.
